IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
1967 Dir: Norman Jewison Starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates 109 mins
There are vacations from hell, and then there are vacations where you're arrested for the murder of a man you've never met. Such is the vacation of Virgin Tibbs (Poitier), who is arrested for the murder of a wealthy local businessman by a the prejudiced Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Steiger). Tibbs is suspected of the crime because he is black and has money. In clearing himself and another wrongly accused suspect, he impresses the victim's widow, who insists that Tibbs leads the investigation from there on out. Neither Tibbs nor Gillespie like the situation, but as they work together, they begin to respect one another. In the racially-charged South, can they navigate through the peeping toms, the illicit sexual encounters, and the vigilantes to find the real killer?
